Rent, a rock musical loosely based on Giacomo Puccini's opera La Bohème is coming to the Heinz Hall!
The musical features an impressive ensemble of artists who bring to life a captivating story of a group of impoverished young artists struggling to survive in New York City's Lower East Side in the days of Bohemia in Alphabet City, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. The original show was first performed as a workshop production at New York Theatre Workshop in 1993 and the same venue was used for its official debut in 1996. The show won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama and production was then moved to Broadway's larger Nederlander Theatre. The Broadway production was nominated for 10 Tony Awards, and won 4 (including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score). The production had a 12-year run of 5,123 performances, making it the 11th longest-running Broadway show. The show’s success led to several national tours, numerous foreign productions, and in 2005 it was adapted into a motion picture featuring most of the original cast members.
